A blackout in Newtown usually plays out in a terrace row or a converted building. The suburb is split between the Inner West Council (about 57% of its area) and the City of Sydney (about 43%); postcode 2042.
Terraces and townhouses account for 52.0% of homes and flats or apartments 39.8%, with only 5.0% separate houses — so most after-hours calls involve shared walls or shared boards.
What tends to fail here
The streets around King Street were built out with working-class cottages and terraces from the late 1880s to the early 1900s. Wiring in those homes has been added in stages over more than a century, and the weak points are usually the oldest sections — perished cable in roof cavities, aged boards, and joins from long-forgotten alterations.
In converted buildings, faults often trace back to whatever the conversion left behind: boards split between lots, shared risers, and circuits serving more than one flat.
A burning smell or a warm switch plate is reason enough to switch the circuit off and call, whatever the age of the building.

I highly recommend Joe, he's very skilled, kind and does honest work. He did a massive last minute job for us, installing an entire 17.4kw ducted aircon system after our old unit broke.

It was an extremely exceptional service from Joe! He came to replace my cooktop on my rented unit then went above and beyond liaising and explaining with my property manager.

I recently had Joe fix two exhaust fans at my place, and I couldn't be more satisfied with the service. Joe showed up on time, explained everything clearly, and fixed the issues quickly.
Flats and shared buildings
With 57.6% of Newtown homes rented, many emergency calls come from tenants in shared buildings.
Faults on common property — the main board, risers, hallway lighting — are for the building manager or strata, while the board inside your flat is the owner's. We work out which side a fault sits on first, because it decides who authorises the repair.
Keep your building manager's contact details handy: when the fault is on common property, they are the ones who can authorise the repair, and delays usually come from tracking them down.

Whole street out, or just you?
Terrace rows share a street supply, so when a whole row goes dark at once, the fault is almost always on the network. Ausgrid is the network operator for this part of Sydney, and its outage page shows current incidents and restoration estimates.
If your home is the only one affected, the fault is on your side of the meter — a tripped main switch, a failed board, or a service issue. That is the time to call Empire.

Summer load on old circuits
The nearest weather stations with published averages are Sydney Airport and Observatory Hill, both about 5.2 km away; Sydney Airport's January mean maximum is 26.8°C.
Hot evenings bring out portable and window air conditioners across the suburb, and century-old circuits carrying modern cooling loads can start to trip. If that sounds familiar, a board check before summer is cheaper than an after-hours callout.

Questions from Newtown
Half my Newtown terrace has power and half doesn't — what's going on?+
That pattern usually means one circuit has failed while others hold. In the suburb's older terraces, different rooms often sit on circuits installed decades apart, so a single tripped or failed circuit will knock out just part of the house — an on-your-side fault we can attend after hours.
I'm a tenant in a Newtown flat with no power — do I call you or the agent?+
Both, in the right order. If the fault is inside your flat — your own board or circuits — the owner authorises the repair, so loop in the agent. If the building's main board or risers have failed, that is common property for the strata manager. If you're unsure which it is, call us and we will work it out on site.
The whole terrace row is dark — is that your job?+
No — a row-wide outage is a network matter, so check Ausgrid's outage page for restoration times. Once supply is restored, if your home still won't power up or a switch keeps tripping, that residual fault is ours to fix.
