What safety switch installation actually costs in Sydney

Single circuit RCD retrofit: $180–$260 fully installed — one existing circuit converted to RCD-protected, tested, CCEW issued.

RCBO retrofit across a standard 8–10 circuit board: $780–$1,400 — individual safety switch on every circuit, no more shared-RCD nuisance tripping.

Full switchboard upgrade including RCBOs on every circuit: $1,800–$3,500 for standard residential, $2,400–$3,500 for 10–14 circuit federation/brick veneer. Almost always the right call on older boards.

RCD vs RCBO — pick the right one

RCD (safety switch) — detects earth leakage, trips before you get a fatal shock. Cheapest option but usually shared across multiple circuits.

MCB (circuit breaker) — trips on overload or short circuit, protects the wiring. Doesn't protect against shock.

RCBO — both functions in one device on one circuit. Modern best practice: individual RCBO on every circuit means a fault on the outdoor GPO doesn't take out the kitchen, lounge and hallway too.

When RCBOs are worth it: any switchboard being touched in a renovation, any rental property upgrade, anywhere nuisance tripping is a problem, anywhere earth leakage is intermittent and hard to isolate.

NSW rental / landlord safety switch requirements

Since March 2023, all NSW residential rental properties must have safety switches on both power and lighting circuits.

Landlord obligation — the owner is responsible for compliance; the property manager should confirm at tenant handover and at each renewal.

Evidence — a Certificate of Compliance Electrical Work (CCEW) issued by a licensed electrical contractor is the compliance document. We provide it after installation.

Testing — RCDs/RCBOs should be push-button tested by the resident every 3–6 months. We include a tenant-facing test card at the switchboard.

If the property has ceramic fuses or a non-compliant board, a full switchboard upgrade is usually more cost-effective than a partial retrofit — and future-proofs the property against the next round of tenancy law changes.

Signs you need safety switches installed or upgraded

The most obvious — you have no RCDs at all, or only one shared RCD covering multiple circuits.

Ceramic re-wireable fuses on the main board — no RCD retrofit possible, needs a full switchboard upgrade.

Nuisance tripping — an RCD that trips 'for no reason' is usually cumulative earth leakage from too many appliances on one device. RCBOs fix it.

You're a landlord and haven't confirmed compliance since March 2023.

You're renovating, adding an EV charger, ducted AC, hot water changeover, or induction cooktop — the affected circuit legally requires RCD protection.

You've had a shock from an appliance or GPO — a working RCD would have prevented it. Get it installed before it happens twice.

How much does safety switch installation cost in Sydney?

A single RCD retrofit on an existing circuit is typically $180–$260 fully installed. A full RCBO retrofit across a standard 8–10 circuit board (individual safety switch + breaker on every circuit) runs $780–$1,400 depending on switchboard type and whether tails need renewing. If the board is ceramic-fuse or otherwise not RCD-compatible, we usually recommend a full switchboard upgrade instead — $1,800–$3,500 for a residential board with RCBOs on every circuit.

Do I legally need a safety switch on every circuit?

AS/NZS 3000 requires RCD protection on any final subcircuit that is added or altered. In practice that means every renovation, extension, new appliance circuit (EV charger, ducted AC, induction cooktop, heat pump) triggers RCD protection on the affected circuit. NSW rental properties must have safety switches on power and lighting circuits since March 2023, and every residential property built or substantially renovated since 1991 already requires RCDs.

What's the difference between an RCD and an RCBO?

An RCD (safety switch) protects against electric shock by detecting earth leakage. A circuit breaker protects against overload and short circuit. An RCBO is both in one device — safety switch AND circuit breaker on that single circuit. Modern best practice is RCBO on every circuit so one fault only trips one circuit, not the whole floor. Older 'shared RCD' setups (one RCD covering 4–6 circuits) meet compliance but trip too much and take too long to fault-find.

Can you install safety switches on my old switchboard?

Sometimes. If the board has enough spare width and the busbar can accept modern RCBOs, we retrofit in place. If it has ceramic re-wireable fuses, an asbestos backing, no earth bar, or is otherwise non-compliant, we recommend a full switchboard upgrade — the retrofit ends up costing 60–70% of a new board anyway, with none of the compliance and future-proofing benefit.

How long does safety switch installation take?

A single RCD retrofit is 45–60 minutes with power off for 15–20 minutes. A full RCBO retrofit on a standard residential board is 2–4 hours with power off for the duration. Full switchboard replacement including RCBOs on every circuit is a one-day job with 2–4 hours of outage.

Are landlords required to install safety switches in NSW?

Yes. Since March 2023, all NSW residential rental properties must have safety switches on both power and lighting circuits. Landlords are responsible for ensuring compliance and providing evidence at tenant hand-over. We issue a Certificate of Compliance Electrical Work (CCEW) after installation which satisfies this requirement.

What triggers a safety switch to trip?

Genuine earth leakage from a faulty appliance (kettle, iron, old fridge), water ingress into a GPO or light fitting, damaged cable insulation, or a shared neutral fault on older shared-neutral wiring. Nuisance tripping (trips with no obvious cause) is usually cumulative leakage from many appliances on one RCD — the fix is to move to RCBOs so each circuit has its own tolerance.
