LED downlight replacement in Sydney — cost, choices & compliance

Everything Sydney homeowners actually ask before booking an LED changeover — real costs per light, how much you'll save vs halogens, which colour temperature to pick, and why fire-rated fittings matter.

Halogen → LED

Full house changeover in a day. Fixed price per light, no upsells.

80%+ energy cut

9 W LED replaces a 50 W halogen. Roughly $500/yr saved on a typical 30-light home.

IC-4 & fire-rated

Every fitting compliant with insulation-contact and fire-rating rules. CCEW on completion.

Homes & strata

Single rooms, whole houses, cafes, offices, strata common areas — same crew.

SECTION 01

What LED downlight replacement really costs in Sydney

Straight lamp-and-fitting swap (existing hole, ceiling access, no rewire): $65–$95 per downlight fully installed with a mid-tier IC-4 LED.

Rewiring an old 12 V halogen circuit to 240 V LED: add $25–$45 per light. Almost always worth doing — the old transformers are a common source of buzzing and premature LED failure.

Moving or adding positions (patching plaster, running new cable): $80–$140 per light on top of the base rate. Best combined with a repaint.

Bulk jobs (12+ lights, same visit): 15–25% off the per-light rate. Whole-home 30-light changeovers typically land at $1,800–$2,600.

SECTION 02

The four choices that matter

Wattage & brightness — for most Sydney living rooms and bedrooms, 9 W (≈800 lumens) matches the old 50 W halogen look. For kitchens, garages and workshops, step up to 12–15 W (≈1,200 lumens).

Colour temperature — 3000 K warm white for living/bedrooms, 4000 K neutral for kitchens/bathrooms/laundries, 5000 K cool for garages/workshops. Tri-colour fittings let you switch between all three at install.

Dimmable or not — decide up front. Dimmable LEDs cost $8–$18 more per light and need a compatible trailing-edge dimmer. Non-dimmable is fine for most rooms.

IC-4 fire rating — mandatory anywhere insulation touches the fitting (most modern ceilings) and anywhere the ceiling is fire-rated (strata common areas, garage under living). We only fit certified units.

SECTION 03

Payback and energy savings

One 50 W halogen replaced with a 9 W LED, running 4 hours a night, saves about 60 kWh per year — roughly $17 at 2026 NSW retail rates.

Across a typical 30-downlight Sydney home, that's around 1,800 kWh per year saved, or ~$500 off the annual power bill.

Payback on a full-house changeover: 3–5 years cash payback, plus the halogens stop cooking your ceiling insulation and the LEDs last 20,000+ hours instead of 2,000.

FAQs

How much does it cost to replace halogen downlights with LEDs in Sydney?

Straight lamp-and-fitting swap in an existing ceiling: $65–$95 per downlight installed (light supplied), assuming ceiling access and no rewiring. Rewiring a hardwired 12 V halogen with a modern 240 V LED, or moving positions, adds $25–$45 per light. Bulk jobs (12+ lights) usually drop the per-light rate by 15–25%.

How much power do LED downlights save vs halogens?

A typical 50 W halogen replaced with a 9 W LED cuts that light's electricity use by roughly 82%. Across a Sydney home with 30 downlights running 4 hours per night, that is about 1,800 kWh saved per year — roughly $500 off the annual power bill at 2026 NSW retail rates.

Are LED downlights dimmable?

Most modern LED downlights are dimmable, but only when paired with a compatible trailing-edge or LED-specific dimmer. Old leading-edge dimmers designed for halogens usually cause flicker, buzz, or premature failure. We swap dimmers as part of the changeover when needed.

What colour temperature should I choose?

For living areas and bedrooms, 3000 K (warm white) matches the familiar halogen look. For kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, and workspaces, 4000 K (neutral white) gives better task lighting. Modern tri-colour LEDs let you pick between 3000 K / 4000 K / 5000 K on install — worth the small premium if you want flexibility later.

Do LED downlights need to be IC-rated or fire-rated?

Any downlight covered by insulation must be IC-4 rated (insulation-contact abutted). Any downlight through a fire-rated ceiling (many strata common areas, garages under living space) must be fire-rated. We check both before quoting and always fit compliant units — cheap uncertified imports from marketplace sites are the leading cause of ceiling-cavity fires.
