SECTION 01

What a Sydney mains upgrade actually costs

Single-phase 63A to 100A upgrade — most common Sydney job: $2,800–$5,500 fully installed. Covers the new consumer mains cable from meter to switchboard, POA re-termination, Ausgrid notification, metering coordinator fees, testing and CCEW.

Single-phase with meter relocation (renovation, driveway change, heritage façade): $4,500–$7,500. Adds a new meter box, cabling run and often a compliance-driven switchboard upgrade at the same time.

Single to three-phase conversion: $6,500–$12,000 depending on cable run, whether the service line needs replacing from the pit or pole, and whether Ausgrid needs to bring three-phase into your street. Almost always paired with a new three-phase switchboard.

Emergency service line replacement after storm damage: $2,200–$4,500 for a like-for-like replacement, more if the POA bracket, meter box or mains cable also need renewing.

SECTION 02

The five things that actually move the price

Single vs three-phase — three-phase always means more cable, more metering equipment, and often a network augmentation fee. It's not just 3× the material — it's usually 2–3× the total install cost.

Cable run length — a meter box next to the switchboard is 3 metres of tails; a detached meter box at the front fence with a switchboard at the rear of a long block is 15–25 metres of trench + cable + reinstatement.

Existing meter box condition — an old asbestos-cement enclosure needs licensed removal and disposal before we can re-mount the new metering. Budget +$400–$900 if asbestos is confirmed.

Ausgrid contestable/non-contestable classification — most residential upgrades are non-contestable and use standard fees. Contestable jobs (usually multi-unit developments, HV work) need a formal design and cost more in admin.

Extras bundled in the same outage — surge protection ($120–$220), a switchboard upgrade ($1,800–$3,500), an EV-charger-ready subcircuit ($180–$260) are all materially cheaper to do while the power is already off.

SECTION 03

How the Ausgrid process actually works

Step 1 — site assessment. We inspect the point of attachment, mains cable, meter box, switchboard, and confirm the load calculations. If a switchboard upgrade needs to happen at the same time we scope both in one visit.

Step 2 — paperwork lodged. Level 2 Notification, contestable/non-contestable forms, and metering coordinator submission all go to Ausgrid. Typical turnaround is 5–10 business days for the outage window to be confirmed.

Step 3 — planned outage day. Power isolated at the network, service line and/or mains cable replaced, new metering installed and commissioned, POA re-terminated, everything tested to AS/NZS 3000.

Step 4 — reconnection and certification. Notification of Service Works submitted, CCEW issued to you, and the metering coordinator activates the new NMI. Power back on, all paperwork in your inbox before we leave.

SECTION 04

When you actually need a mains upgrade

Adding an EV charger and a heat pump, or two EV chargers, or a 22kW three-phase EV charger on an existing single-phase supply.

Ducted air conditioning + induction cooktop + heat pump hot water added in a renovation — the combined peak load usually exceeds 63A.

Building a granny flat or secondary dwelling that needs its own NMI and metering.

Storm has damaged the service line, POA bracket or meter box — often a Level 2 make-safe emergency.

Ausgrid has issued a defect notice on your point of attachment or consumer mains after an inspection.

Old private power pole is rotten, leaning, or has been flagged by the arborist during tree work.

FAQs

How much does a mains upgrade cost in Sydney?

Most Sydney residential mains upgrades from 63A to 100A single-phase land between $2,800 and $5,500 fully installed. That includes the consumer mains cable from meter to switchboard, new point of attachment (POA) terminations, Ausgrid notification and metering coordinator fees. Three-phase upgrades (typical for larger homes, ducted AC + EV + heat pump loads) run $6,500–$12,000 depending on cable run, existing meter box condition and whether the service line itself needs replacing.

How long does the whole process take?

From first site visit to power back on is usually 2–4 weeks. The physical work is one day (4–6 hours of outage for single-phase, up to a full day for three-phase). The waiting time is Ausgrid — notification lodgement, metering coordinator scheduling and the booked outage window. We handle every piece of paperwork so you don't chase anything.

Why do I need a Level 2 electrician for a mains upgrade?

Anything that connects to the network side of your meter — the service line, point of attachment, consumer mains cable and metering — legally must be done by an Accredited Service Provider (Level 2 ASP) authorised by Ausgrid. Empire Electrical Contractors is ASP-accredited, so we quote, disconnect, install, meter and reconnect in one visit without waiting on a separate contractor.

Do I need to upgrade my mains to install an EV charger?

Sometimes. A single 7kW EV charger usually fits within existing 63A mains if the rest of the house load isn't heavy. A 22kW three-phase charger, a second EV, or a heat pump/induction cooktop added on top of an EV charger almost always needs the mains upgraded. We assess load capacity as part of the EV charger quote and tell you upfront whether Level 2 work is required.

Can you upgrade from single-phase to three-phase?

Yes — three-phase conversion is one of our most common Level 2 jobs. It usually means a new service line from the pit or pole, three-phase metering, and often a new switchboard sized for the increased capacity. Budget $6,500–$12,000 depending on cable run and whether Ausgrid needs to bring three-phase to your street pit.

What paperwork is involved?

We lodge the Level 2 Notification of Service Works with Ausgrid, the contestable/non-contestable paperwork, the metering coordinator submission for new or relocated meters, and a Certificate of Compliance Electrical Work (CCEW) on completion. You receive copies of everything for your records and insurance.

How long will my power be off?

A typical single-phase 63A→100A upgrade is 4–6 hours of outage on the day. Three-phase upgrades or full meter relocations can be a full day. We book the outage window to suit you — early mornings are standard so power is back by lunch.
