When the power goes in Croydon, it is usually a house. The suburb is split between the Municipality of Burwood (about 62% of its area) and the Inner West Council (about 38%); postcode 2132.
Separate houses account for 55.1% of homes, terraces and townhouses 17.2%, and flats or apartments 27.0% — and because so much of the housing dates to the early 1900s, age shapes what fails.
What tends to fail here
Three conservation areas — Malvern Hill and the Cintra Estate under the Burwood LEP 2012, and Gads Hill under the Inner West LEP 2022 — protect housing that went up from 1909 onwards, when the Malvern Hill Estate was opened for development. In homes of that vintage, the usual after-hours failures are aged boards, perished cable sections and joins left by decades of alterations.
Where the call involves a unit, the failure points are the unit's own board or shared risers: one unit dark while the rest of the block has power means the fault is inside that lot, and several units out together means common property.

I highly recommend Joe, he's very skilled, kind and does honest work. He did a massive last minute job for us, installing an entire 17.4kw ducted aircon system after our old unit broke.

It was an extremely exceptional service from Joe! He came to replace my cooktop on my rented unit then went above and beyond liaising and explaining with my property manager.

I recently had Joe fix two exhaust fans at my place, and I couldn't be more satisfied with the service. Joe showed up on time, explained everything clearly, and fixed the issues quickly.
Apartments and strata buildings
With 29.5% of Croydon homes rented, a share of emergency calls come from tenants in the suburb's smaller unit blocks.
Faults on common property — the main board, risers, hallway lighting — go through the building manager or strata, and the board inside the unit is the owner's. Establishing which side a fault sits on is the first step of the callout, because it decides who authorises the repair.
It helps to know before we arrive whether other units are affected, so mention that when you ring.

Whole street out, or just you?
Start by looking out the window. Lights on at the neighbours' places means the network is fine and the fault belongs to your property; a dark street means the network has failed. Croydon is supplied by Ausgrid, and its outage page tracks active incidents street by street.
Property-side faults we attend after hours include a main switch that trips and won't reset, a board with visible damage or a burning smell, and partial power where some rooms work and others don't.

Summer load on older circuits
Weather records from Canterbury Racecourse — about 2.8 km away and the nearest open station — put the January mean maximum at 27.8°C across 1995–2026.
Early-1900s housing feels that heat: on hot nights, air conditioners running across the suburb push old circuits past their limits, and evening tripping follows.
A board that only trips in summer is telling you something — have it checked before the next hot spell.
If part of the house has power and part doesn't, one circuit has failed; leave the switch off and we will take it from there.

Questions from Croydon
My early-1900s Croydon house keeps tripping on hot nights — why?+
Summer heat is the trigger. Air-conditioning load can overload the older wiring in the suburb's early-1900s housing, and a board and circuit assessment will show whether capacity or a failing device is responsible.
Our small Croydon unit block has no hallway power — who arranges the fix?+
The owners corporation. Hallway and common-area circuits are common property, so the repair goes through the building manager or strata. If the fault is inside your own unit instead — your board or circuits — that is the owner's to arrange, and we can attend either once the right party authorises it.
Power is out across my Croydon street — do I call an electrician?+
Not for the street itself — a multi-property outage is a network fault, so check Ausgrid's outage page for updates. If supply returns to your neighbours but not to you, or a switch will not stay on afterwards, that remaining fault is on your side of the meter and is when to call us.
