Dulwich Hill is a suburb of flats — 57.0% of its 6,893 private dwellings are apartments — wholly in the Inner West Council area (postcode 2203), on the Ausgrid network. When power fails here after hours, the first question is whether the fault is inside your lot or in the building's shared supply.
The housing spans inter-war double-brick houses, post-war walk-ups and newer apartment buildings, so the fault could be a century-old join or a modern board trip. Either way: make safe first, then find it.
Unit blocks after hours
In a suburb where most homes are units, many emergency calls start with the same puzzle: my flat is dark, but the hallway lights are on. That pattern usually means the fault is inside your lot — your board or one of its circuits.
If the hallway, lifts or garage are out too, the problem may be on common property — the meter panel or a riser — which is the owners corporation's to fix. We attend both, and we can tell quickly which one you are looking at.
With thousands of dwellings in everything from inter-war walk-ups to recent towers, the common failures in each building type are familiar — and the parts that usually fix them are on the van.
For renters, the agent is the first call for authorisation; for anything immediately dangerous — burning smell, heat at a switch, water near live wiring — keep clear and call us first.

It was an extremely exceptional service from Joe! He came to replace my cooktop on my rented unit then went above and beyond liaising and explaining with my property manager.

I recently had Joe fix two exhaust fans at my place, and I couldn't be more satisfied with the service. Joe showed up on time, explained everything clearly, and fixed the issues quickly.
Inter-war houses and their boards
The Abergeldie Estate's 127 lots were auctioned in 1928 and built on over the following ten years, and those double-brick houses still make up much of the suburb's house stock. Their boards have typically been extended in stages, and after-hours faults often trace to an old join or a device at the end of its life.
We isolate the failed circuit, check for heat in the board, and restore power to the rest of the home where we can. The permanent repair is quoted in writing before it starts.

Street out, or just you?
When the whole street goes dark, that is the network — Ausgrid supplies the suburb, and its outage page shows incidents and estimated restoration times. No electrician can speed that up.
When your home is the only one out, the cause sits on your side of the meter: a main switch that will not stay up, a failed service fuse, or a board fault. We attend those around the clock.

Hot nights in the walk-ups
Canterbury Racecourse, about 2.4 km away, is the nearest open weather station; its January mean maximum is 27.8°C across 1995–2026. Top-floor units hold that heat, and portable coolers pile onto circuits never sized for them.
With 46.1% of homes rented, many of those calls come from tenants. If your power only fails on hot nights, the circuit is at its limit — report it to your agent, and we can assess and quote the fix.

Questions from Dulwich Hill
My Dulwich Hill flat is dark but the hallway lights work — what now?+
That usually means the fault is inside your own lot, not the building's shared supply. Check your safety switches — if one has tripped and will not hold, leave it off and call. We attend unit faults after hours, and if the cause turns out to be common property, we liaise with your strata manager.
Why does my Dulwich Hill unit lose power on hot nights?+
Heat is the usual trigger: on the hottest evenings, cooling load overwhelms older circuits. A board assessment will tell you whether the answer is more capacity, a new device, or a dedicated circuit. The assessment is quick and the quote is written.
The whole street near Marrickville Road is out — who handles that?+
Street-wide outages are network work. Ausgrid supplies the suburb and publishes incidents with restoration estimates on its outage page. If power returns to the street but your home stays dark — or a switch will not stay on — call us then.
