Canada Bay is a small bayside suburb — 510 private dwellings at the 2021 Census, wholly in the City of Canada Bay Council area (postcode 2046) on the Ausgrid network. When power fails here after hours, it is usually one house with a board or circuit fault, and occasionally one of the suburb's apartments.
The housing splits two ways: streets on land reclaimed from the 1960s, with newer wiring, and older streets where boards have grown piecemeal. Either way, the drill is the same — make safe first, then find the fault.
After-hours faults in a small suburb
In the newer streets — the blocks sold in 1972–73 around Marceau and Durham Streets and Lyons Road West — after-hours calls tend to be a tripping safety switch, a failed hot water element circuit or a single dead circuit. In the older streets, add tired boards and wiring that has been extended over decades to the list.
With 59.9% of homes being separate houses, most emergencies here belong to one owner: no strata to wake up, no committee to wait on. We isolate the fault, make the home safe, and quote the repair before starting it.
For the apartment share, we check first whether the fault is inside your lot or on the building's common property — the answer decides who authorises the repair.
In a suburb this small, no street is far from the next, and the housing is consistent enough that the parts most jobs need are already on the van.

I highly recommend Joe, he's very skilled, kind and does honest work. He did a massive last minute job for us, installing an entire 17.4kw ducted aircon system after our old unit broke.

It was an extremely exceptional service from Joe! He came to replace my cooktop on my rented unit then went above and beyond liaising and explaining with my property manager.

I recently had Joe fix two exhaust fans at my place, and I couldn't be more satisfied with the service. Joe showed up on time, explained everything clearly, and fixed the issues quickly.
Street out, or just you?
A whole-street outage is a network event. Ausgrid supplies this postcode, and its outage page lists current incidents with restoration estimates — no electrician can restore a network fault faster.
A single dark home is different: a main switch that will not stay up, a failed service fuse, or a fault inside the board. Those are exactly the jobs we attend around the clock.

Heatwaves and harbour breezes
Canterbury Racecourse, about 4.6 km away, is the nearest open weather station; its January mean maximum is 27.8°C across records from 1995 to 2026.
On the hottest evenings, air conditioners across the suburb run flat out, and marginal boards show it. If your power only ever fails on hot nights, the board is telling you it is at its limit — worth having checked before summer rather than during it.

If you rent here
About a third of Canada Bay homes are rented. If that is you and the power fails, tell your agent or landlord what has happened — urgent electrical repairs are meant to be arranged promptly — and we can coordinate with the property manager on authorisation while making the home safe.
Anything immediately dangerous — burning smell, heat at a switch or outlet, water near live wiring — comes before the paperwork: keep clear and call.
If the fault turns out to be on the network side, we tell you that too — and point you to the right number.

Questions from Canada Bay
My Canada Bay house lost power on a hot night — is that the network?+
Not usually. If neighbouring homes still have power, the cause is on your side — often a board pushed past its limit by air-conditioning load. On the hottest summer evenings, air-conditioning load pushes marginal boards into tripping. We can attend, make safe and quote the fix.
The whole street near Bayview Park is out — who handles that?+
A street-wide outage belongs to the network. Ausgrid supplies the suburb and lists incidents and restoration estimates on its outage page. Once the street is back, if your home is still dark or a switch refuses to stay on, that is the point to call us.
I rent in Canada Bay and a power point is sparking — what should I do?+
Keep everyone away from it, switch off the circuit at the board if you can do so safely, and call your agent or landlord straight away — sparking is an urgent repair. We can attend after hours and coordinate authorisation with the property manager while making the point safe.
