How to find a licensed electrician in NSW — the 2026 checklist

A practical guide to checking a Sydney electrician's credentials before you hire them — how to verify a NSW Fair Trading licence, what a CCEW is, what a legitimate quote should include, and the red flags that mean you should walk away.

NSW Fair Trading licensed

Every job carried out under a current NSW electrical contractor licence, verifiable online in 60 seconds.

CCEW on completion

Certificate of Compliance Electrical Work lodged with Ausgrid and emailed to you the same day.

$20M public liability

Full insurance cover on every job — certificate of currency available on request.

Transparent written quotes

Itemised, ABN and licence number on the quote, no cash-only or pressure tactics.

SECTION 01

Verify the NSW licence before you commit

Every electrician quoting or invoicing work in NSW must hold a current licence issued by NSW Fair Trading. There are two things worth checking: the individual tradesperson certificate (proves the sparky is qualified) and the electrical contractor licence (proves the business can legally contract for the work).

Head to service.nsw.gov.au and search 'check a home building licence'. Enter the business name or licence number — the tool returns the licence class, current status, expiry and any restrictions or conditions. A cancelled, suspended or expired licence is a hard stop; do not proceed regardless of the price.

SECTION 02

Understand the CCEW — and why it matters

The Certificate of Compliance Electrical Work (CCEW) is a formal document a NSW electrical contractor must issue for most fixed-wiring work. It certifies the installation meets AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules) and is lodged with the network operator — Ausgrid in the Sydney area.

Why it matters: without a CCEW, insurers can (and do) deny claims arising from electrical faults or fires; conveyancing solicitors flag missing CCEWs during property sales; and body corporate managers reject strata electrical work that arrives without one.

A legitimate Sydney electrician will offer the CCEW as standard, not as an extra. If it's not mentioned in the quote, ask before the job starts.

SECTION 03

What a real Sydney electrician's quote looks like

Written, on business letterhead, with the business ABN and NSW contractor licence number clearly listed. Verbal quotes and text-message estimates are not enforceable and give you nothing to hold the contractor to.

Itemised scope of work — points to be installed, circuits affected, materials being used (brand and model matter for switchboards, RCDs, EV chargers), labour hours or fixed-price line items, GST breakdown, and any exclusions clearly listed.

Warranty terms in writing. Empire covers workmanship for a minimum of 12 months (longer on switchboards and EV chargers) and passes through the full manufacturer warranty on hardware.

CCEW issuance and any Ausgrid notification lodgement stated up front — not billed as a surprise extra after the job is done.

SECTION 04

The red flags — walk away if you see these

Cash-only with no invoice, no ABN, or 'a mate' quoting on the side. Unlicensed electrical work voids home insurance and creates a fire and shock risk you carry forever.

A quote that undercuts the market by 40% or more. Cutting corners on cable size, RCD protection, or termination quality is how fires start. Cheap electrical work is not a bargain — it's a liability.

Pressure tactics: 'sign today or the price goes up', 'my apprentice can start now if you pay cash', 'the switchboard is dangerous, I need to replace it right now' without a written diagnostic. Legitimate electricians give you time to think.

Refusal to provide a licence number, insurance certificate or CCEW when asked. Anyone operating properly hands these over without argument.

SECTION 05

Level 2 ASP vs standard electrician — which do you need?

A Level 2 Accredited Service Provider (ASP) is authorised to work on the network side of your meter — service mains, point of attachment, private poles, meter relocations, new connections and consumer mains upgrades. This is separate accreditation from a standard electrical contractor licence.

A standard electrical contractor handles everything from your meter onwards — switchboards, circuits, GPOs, lighting, appliances, EV chargers, hot water. Most homeowners never need to think about the distinction because the same firm handles both.

When it matters: if you're upgrading your mains supply from 63A to 100A, relocating your meter, replacing a private pole, or connecting a new build, confirm the firm holds current Level 2 ASP accreditation with Ausgrid. Empire is Ausgrid Level 2 ASP accredited so we handle both sides of the meter in one visit.

FAQs

How do I check if an electrician is licensed in NSW?

Use NSW Fair Trading's free online licence check at service.nsw.gov.au. Enter the tradesperson's name or licence number and it returns the licence class, status (current/expired/cancelled) and any conditions. An electrical contractor licence is required for anyone quoting or invoicing electrical work, while individual sparkies hold a qualified supervisor certificate or a tradesperson certificate.

What is a Certificate of Compliance Electrical Work (CCEW)?

The CCEW is a legal document a licensed NSW electrical contractor must issue for most fixed-wiring work. It certifies the work meets AS/NZS 3000 and is lodged with the network operator (Ausgrid in Sydney). You should receive a copy — no CCEW means the work is not certified, which affects insurance claims and future property sales.

What are the red flags of an unlicensed or dodgy electrician?

Cash-only with no invoice or ABN, no written quote, no CCEW offered, refusal to provide a licence number, extremely low quotes that undercut the market by 40%+, pressure tactics for on-the-spot decisions, and no public liability insurance. Any of these means walk away — unlicensed electrical work voids home insurance and creates a real fire risk.

What should a legitimate Sydney electrician quote include?

A written quote on business letterhead with ABN, contractor licence number, itemised scope of work, materials, labour, GST, expected CCEW issuance, warranty period (minimum 12 months on workmanship for Empire), and any exclusions. Verbal quotes are not enforceable — always get it in writing before work starts.

Do I need a Level 2 ASP for my job?

You need a Level 2 Accredited Service Provider (ASP) for any work on the network side of the meter — service line repairs, point of attachment, private pole work, meter relocations, mains upgrades and new connections. A standard electrical contractor handles everything from the meter onwards (switchboard, circuits, GPOs, lighting). Ask upfront which side of the meter your job sits.

What insurance should a Sydney electrician carry?

Minimum public liability of $20 million (industry standard), workers compensation for any employees, and Home Building Compensation Fund (HBCF) insurance for residential work over $20,000. Ask for certificates of currency — a reputable electrician will provide them without hesitation.
