HV switchgear, transformer and substation electrical works

Commercial and industrial sites with HV switchgear, chamber or kiosk substations need specialist electrical contractors. We deliver the LV scope alongside HV partners on new works, upgrades and defect rectification.

## What's included
- LV scope for new kiosk and chamber substations
- HV switchgear installation coordination
- Transformer connection and LV distribution
- Substation earthing and equipotential bonding
- HV/LV cable installation and termination
- Defect rectification for insurer or network audits

## Overview
High voltage and substation electrical work sits at the top of the commercial electrical scope — new kiosk substations for large developments, chamber substation refurbishments for strata and industrial sites, transformer replacements, and LV distribution downstream of the transformer. Empire Electrical Contractors delivers the LV scope end to end and coordinates with accredited HV partners for the switching, testing and commissioning that requires HV tickets.
Typical projects include a new commercial fit-out where the tenancy needs a dedicated transformer and metering; a strata scheme with an aging chamber substation that has been served an insurer or Ausgrid defect notice; and a light-industrial site upgrading from a padmount transformer to a kiosk arrangement to free up land. We handle the LV switchgear, cable ladders and trays, main switchboards, distribution boards, earthing and bonding, and the compliance documentation the network operator requires for energisation.
Every HV/substation project is delivered against a written program with defined hold points for HV switching, insulation testing, protection testing and network sign-off. $20M public liability and full workers cover — insurance certificates and induction paperwork provided for every site.

## Fixed pricing
$25,000–$250,000 AUD per project. Workmanship warranty 24 months. Typical on-site duration ~80 hours.

## Symptoms we hear about
- Ageing transformer nearing end of life
- New tenancy requires HV capacity increase
- Substation inspection overdue

## Common causes
- Load growth exceeding transformer rating
- Oil-filled equipment past service life
- Missing HV maintenance records

## How we handle it
1. **Assess** — HV licensed engineer inspects the substation and reviews SLDs and maintenance history.
2. **Coordinate outage** — Outage window planned with Ausgrid and the customer, temporary generation arranged if needed.
3. **Install and commission** — Switchgear or transformer installed, protection settings tested and commissioned.
4. **Certify** — HV compliance documentation, thermographic scan and 5-year maintenance plan issued.

## Applicable standards
- AS 2067 — Substations and HV installations
- ENA NENS 04 — Isolation procedures

## FAQs
**Do you hold HV tickets in-house?**
We deliver the LV scope directly and coordinate HV switching, testing and commissioning with accredited HV partners. That model keeps your job on one contract without compromising on HV-ticketed personnel where legally required.

**Can you attend an Ausgrid defect notice on our substation?**
Yes — we inspect the notice, quote the remediation, coordinate the HV outage and rectify. Common defects are earthing bonds, LV cable terminations and door/lock compliance.

**How is a substation project priced?**
Every HV/substation job is quoted against a specific scope, program and network requirement. We provide a detailed written quote within about 5 business days of a site walk-through.

**Do you handle metering for new tenancies downstream of the transformer?**
Yes — LV metering, sub-metering and NMI coordination are standard scope on any new tenancy or capacity upgrade.

**What insurance do you carry for HV work?**
$20M public liability, full workers compensation and professional indemnity where the scope includes design coordination. Certificates issued for every site induction.

**Can you support a planned HV outage overnight or on a weekend?**
Yes — critical-facility HV works are routinely scheduled overnight or on weekends to protect trading and tenancy uptime.
