- Solar-diverting EV chargers for max self-consumption

## Overview
A home EV charger is the difference between plugging in at night and never thinking about range, versus queuing at a public DC fast charger every week. We install every major AC wall charger — Tesla Wall Connector, Wallbox Pulsar, Ocular, Zappi, Fronius Wattpilot — properly wired from the switchboard on a dedicated RCBO with the right protection, not piggybacked off a general power circuit.
For most Sydney homes a 7kW single-phase install is the sweet spot: it adds around 40km of range per hour, works on standard 240V, and doesn't need a three-phase upgrade. If you have three-phase already, or you drive high daily kilometres, 22kW three-phase gets you a full charge in 3-4 hours. Where a home has solar we can install a diverting charger (Zappi, Fronius Wattpilot) that charges the car only from excess solar — turning free daytime PV into free km.
Every install includes an on-site assessment of your switchboard, the cable run, mounting location and phase capacity. We handle any switchboard upgrade needed, Ausgrid notification for high-demand connections, and load balancing so the charger throttles down instead of tripping the main. Certificate of Compliance is issued on completion — a legal requirement in NSW that DIY installs cannot provide.

## Fixed pricing
$900–$1,600 AUD installed. Workmanship warranty 24 months. Typical on-site duration ~4 hours.

## Symptoms we hear about
- 15 A caravan outlet trips or the plug body melts overnight
- Granny cable adding only 10-12 km of range per hour
- House breaker trips whenever the car and oven run together
- Solar exporting to grid while the car sits uncharged

## Common causes
- Charger drawing continuous 15 A on a general power circuit
- No dedicated RCBO circuit from the switchboard
- Switchboard has no spare pole for a 32 A EVSE circuit
- No load management or CT clamp installed at the mains

## How we handle it
1. **On-site assessment** — We measure the cable run, confirm phase availability and check the switchboard has room for a dedicated 32 A RCBO.
2. **Ausgrid notification** — For high-demand connections we lodge the paperwork so your local network operator is on record.
3. **Board prep** — If the board is full we upgrade it or install a sub-board so the EVSE gets its own protection.
4. **Cable run and mount** — We pull the dedicated cable, mount the charger, and seal all penetrations to weatherproof standard.
5. **Commission and load-balance** — Charger paired to Wi-Fi or app, load balancing configured against your main supply so it throttles instead of tripping.
6. **Test and certify** — Full AS/NZS 3000 test, Certificate of Compliance issued, and we walk you through scheduling and solar-only modes.

## Applicable standards
- AS/NZS 3000:2018 Section 7.9 — Electric vehicle charging installations
- AS/NZS 61851 — Electric vehicle conductive charging system
- NSW SIR 2019 — high-demand connections

## Seasonal note
Solar-diverting installs pay back fastest through daylight-saving months — book Sept-Feb to capture peak PV self-consumption.

## Recent anonymised jobs
### Second EV charger added for a two-car household
A Concord household bought a second EV and needed a matching charger beside the first. We checked available switchboard capacity, added load management between both chargers and ran the new circuit. Concord falls inside postcode 2137 on our Inner West route, so we quote up front and finish to AS/NZS 3000 with a compliance certificate. Between the Federation homes and the 1950s red-brick in Concord, we carry parts for both on the van rather than making a second trip.
Outcome: Two chargers sharing capacity safely, no board upgrade needed.. Approx. 240 minutes on site.

### Charger fed from the far side of the property
The driveway in Concord sat well away from the switchboard. We trenched and ran conduit to the parking spot, sized the cable for the voltage drop and mounted a weatherproof charger on the garage wall. Jobs like this between Cabarita Park and Concord Repatriation Hospital are part of our regular Concord run, so callouts here rarely wait long.
Outcome: Long-run charger installed with correct cable sizing, CCEW issued.. Approx. 380 minutes on site.

## FAQs
**Do I need a three-phase supply for an EV charger?**
No - single-phase 7kW is fine for most homes and adds ~40km of range per hour. Three-phase 22kW is faster but only makes sense if you drive high daily kms or have solar to divert.

**Can I install a charger myself if I bought one online?**
No. EV charger install is licensed electrical work in NSW - a Certificate of Compliance is required. DIY installs void insurance and warranty.

**Will it work with my solar?**
Yes - Zappi, Fronius Wattpilot and select others charge only from excess solar automatically. We spec and wire them to talk to your inverter.

**How long does installation take?**
Most single-phase installs are done in 3-5 hours. Complex runs, three-phase, or switchboard upgrades can extend to a full day.

**Which EV charger brand do you recommend?**
It depends on the car and the goal. Tesla Wall Connector is unbeatable for Teslas. Wallbox Pulsar Plus is a great all-rounder. Ocular is the budget pick. Zappi and Fronius Wattpilot are the two best solar-diverting chargers. We stock all of them and quote on merit, not commission.

**Do I need to upgrade my switchboard for an EV charger?**
Not always. If your board has a spare pole, sound tails and adequate main capacity, we just add a dedicated RCBO. If it's a ceramic-fuse board or full to the brim, an upgrade is usually needed — we quote both jobs together up front so there are no surprises.
